Hi. Plas Gwyn in 1871 was owned by Charles Crespigny Vivian, 2nd Baron Vivian, who married the heiress of the previous owners, Mary Elizabeth Panton. The family were living at their main estate in Cornwall at the time, so I guess they were renting it out to William Williams. Although the census says William was a land owner, it wasn't of Plas Gwyn. So he, and his butler Robert, could very well be the ones from Bodelwyddan. Plas Gwyn is just about a mile from Ty Fry, where Sir John's wife came from.

Hi Warren,
I came across your article. I've been researching my family history. My great great grandfather Robert Mitchell was a butler at Bodelwyddan Castle after leaving the army (1st Dragoons Cavalry) in .1864. In the 1871 census his wife and children are in Bodelwyddan and i think he he is staying at Plas Gwyn on Anglesey. The landowner is William Williams (born 1806)(who i think was the Son of Sir John Williams of Bodlewyddan ). I'm wondering if they were visiting at the time of the census perhaps or if i've got the wrong Robert Mitchell and there is no link.
Interestingly his dayghter Ada is a servant at Llanidan in Anglesey in 1881 census. would welcome you view on the link. I'm also wondering how he came to Bodelwyddan in the first place. Did he make a link in the army perhaps.

Thanks for that. I've just done a quick search and found a biography in the Archives Wales site that confirms his second wife was the daughter of the 4th baronet. His two sons from an earlier marriage somehow succeeded to the title, too!

I believe there is a connection to the Parciau estate in Marianglas. I think it is that the current Sir Laurence Williams' mother was one of the daughters of the last family to live in Bodelwyddan Castle.
